In his despair, he unknowingly takes refuge in the home of Bishop Bienvenu, a humble man who lives modestly with his sister and a lone servant. There, Valjean is met with unexpected kindness, causing his inner turmoil to begin softening. Yet, haunted by society’s harsh judgment, he succumbs to temptation and steals the Bishop’s silverware. When the authorities apprehend him, the Bishop surprises all by forgiving Valjean and gifting him the candlesticks. This profound act of mercy marks the turning point in Jean Valjean’s journey, sparking his transformation and the reclamation of his humanity.
