Sony Pictures has announced the appointment of director Paul King to helm a new feature film inspired by the popular Labubu designer toy series. Currently in the early phases of development, the project will see King not only directing but also producing alongside the studio Department M. Paul King brings a strong track record to the film, having recently directed the successful movie Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, which earned approximately $635 million globally. He is also well-known for directing the beloved Paddington films, both of which achieved critical acclaim and a combined box office total near $500 million. Additionally, King contributed as co-writer and executive producer to the third installment of the Paddington franchise, cementing his expertise in family-friendly fantasy cinema. The Labubu brand originated around a decade ago as a series of illustrated books before evolving into a widely popular collectible toy line. These figures are exclusively produced and distributed by Chinese retailer Pop Mart and are sold through "blind boxes," a method where buyers do not know which specific character they will receive. This approach has significantly contributed to Labubu’s widespread appeal and cultivated a dedicated community of collectors. Labubu’s distinctive artistic design comes from Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, who relocated to the Netherlands during childhood. His creations draw inspiration from both European and Asian folklore and are part of his signature "The Monsters" series, which showcases various fantasy characters with a unique visual identity. Details regarding the film’s storyline and the commencement of production have yet to be announced.
